“Indian Council of Medical Research”.  Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India’s Top Agency for Creating, Coordinating, and Promoting Biomedical Research in India. Let’s go ahead and provide you with some more details about it.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India’s leading body for creating, coordinating and disseminating biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research institutes in the world.

As we all know, the Government of India established the Indian Research Fund Association (IRFA) with the specific purpose of volunteering and integrating medical research in the country in the organization and activities of IRFA

Many important changes were made.  It was redesigned in 1949 with much extensive work by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

ICMR is funded by the Government of India through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The Council’s research priorities align with national health priorities such as: controlling and managing infectious diseases, controlling fertility, maternal and child health control, controlling nutritional disorders, developing alternative strategies for providing health care, environmental and occupational control, health issues within safety limits;  Studies on major non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, blindness, diabetes, and other metabolic and blood-related diseases;  And mental health research and drug research (including traditional diarrhoea treatment).

All these efforts are aimed at reducing the overall burden of the disease and towards the health and well-being of the people.

 What is ICMR?

What is the full form of ICMR– ICMR means the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).  It is India’s leading agency for the creation, coordination, and dissemination of biomedical research.  It is funded by the government.  Headquartered in New Delhi, India, through the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and one of the world’s oldest medical research institutes.

The council was created to translate research to improve people’s health.  ICMR promotes biomedical research in the country as well as intramural and extramural research.

For decades, the basis of exaggerated research has been expanded by the Council and its strategies.

Currently, the Council conducts extensive research through 21 permanent research institutes/centres, which are mission-based national institutes located in different regions of India.

Research on specific areas such as tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera and diarrheal diseases.  AIDS, malaria, Cala-zar, vector control, nutrition, food, and drug toxicology, reproduction, immunohematology, Ecology, viral disease and 6 regional teacher research centres, including medical statistics, etc., and the aims of regional health problems.

To strengthen or generate research capacity in different geographical regions of the country.  External research is promoted by ICMR, setting up advanced research centres in various research fields around existing specialization and infrastructure in selected departments of medical colleges, universities, and other ICMR research institutes.

Taskforce studies that emphasize a time-bound, goal-oriented approach, with clearly defined goals, deadlines, standardized and uniform procedures, and often a multilevel structure;  and open research on the basis of the application for grants from scientists from non-ICMR research institutes, medical colleges, universities, etc. in different parts of the country. In addition to research activities, ICMR encourages human resource development in biomedical research.

Research Fellowships, Short Term Visuals, Short Term Research Students and Various Training Programs and Workshops Organized by ICMR Institute and Headquarters.

 ICMR Mission:-

 Creating, managing and disseminating knowledge.

Emphasize the research on the health of the vulnerable and disadvantaged sections of society.

To adopt and encourage advanced biological tools to solve the country’s health problems,

Encourage innovation in diagnosis, treatment, vaccine and other methods for prevention of disease.

For your information, let me tell you that ICMR continues to operate in the biomedical field, in the 5th, the Government of India established Indian Research Funding Association (IRFA) to sponsor and integrate medical research in the country.  After independence, the organization underwent many significant changes and was renamed in 1949 to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The Council has 266 research institutes/centres for conducting internal research.  These research institutes include 21 mission-based national institutes and 5 regional medical research centres established in different regions of the country.  Mission-based national organizations focus on health studies related to cholera, leprosy, tuberculosis, diarrhoea, viral diseases, malaria, nutrition, fertility, oncology, treatment statistics and more.

To promote external research, ICMR took the following initiatives –

Establishes advanced research centres in various fields of research.

Taskforce Studies, which is a national project, has been created keeping in mind the national priority areas of research.  Its Taskforce and other committees help scientists collaborate on skills and infrastructure to start research.

Open research is done on the basis of applications, for grants received from scientists from medical colleges, universities and non-ICMR research institutes.

ICMR promotes human resources development through biomedical research, short-term research student power, and short-term scholarships and other various training programs and workshop research fellowships.  Also, the council gives retired scientists and teachers the title of Emeritus Scientist, so they can continue their research work or start a new study.  It also awards scientists for their contributions to biomedical research.  It is currently offering 38 awards, 11 of which are for young scientists only.

Function of ICMR

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India’s leading body for creating, coordinating and disseminating biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research institutes in the world.
ICMR has always sought to address the growing demand for scientific advancement in biomedical research on the one hand and the need to find effective solutions to the country’s health problems on the other.  The IRMR has come a long way since it was known as IRFA, but the council is aware that it still has scientific breakthroughs and miles to achieve its health goals.

A PTI report states that the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) is setting up four US-funded bio-safety level-three laboratories (BSL-1) in the country to combat any outbreak of AVI flu.  “These labs will be set up in New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Pune,” ICMR Director General Professor KK Ganguly told reporters in Chennai on February 27.

He mentioned that in order to make the centres operational in the current financial year, he said that an international consulting firm has been given the responsibility of setting up centres between Rs 1 crore and Rs 20 crore.  He said that such a centre had already been operated in the central region of Bhopal.  He said that Pune would be the largest, adding that Tamil Nadu was chosen as the centre of the south as most of the poultry was produced in the state.  He said that the Chennai laboratory would be at the Tuberculosis Research Center (TRC).

He said that the council had established the ICMR School of Public Health in downtown Ambattur,  which will offer a two year PG course in epidemiology.  It has a hostel, a guest house, and an international quality training centre.  He states that ICMR has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Boston University and another American University to provide specialized training.  Ganguly said that the council has also established a rural health and research training centre in nearby Thiruvallur, initially investing Rs 1 crore.

Priority of ICMR

The Council’s research priorities align with national health priorities.  Such as controlling and managing infectious diseases, controlling fertility, maternal and children’s health, controlling nutritional disorders, developing alternative strategies for providing health care, preventing environmental and occupational health problems at safety limits.
Studies on major non-communicable diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, blindness, diabetes, and other metabolic and blood-related diseases;  Mental health research and drug research (including traditional diarrhoea treatment).  All these efforts are aimed at reducing the overall burden of the disease and towards the health and well-being of the people.

The council’s management committee is headed by the Union Health Minister.  It is assisted by an advisory board consisting of experts in various biomedical disciplines in scientific and technical matters in scientific and technical matters.
The Board, in its turn, is assisted by multiple scientific advisory teams, scientific advisory committees, expert teams, task forces, steering committees, etc., which evaluate the Council’s various research activities.  The Council promotes biomedical research as well as internal research in the country.  For decades, the Council has expanded the foundation of sophisticated research and its strategies.
