The mid-nineties and the subsequent decade we saw much international debate & discussion around Disaster Response & Preparedness. Some of these are more impactful ones. These were the Yokohama Strategy Plan (1994) & the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005), adopted by the UN. During the same period, India faced some most devastating natural calamities like Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), Gujarat Earthquake (2001), and Indian Ocean Tsunami (2004). After this succession of events, there is a need for a comprehensive disaster management plan. This led to the enactment of the Disaster Management Act on December 26th, 2005. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) was constituted to lay down the policies, plans, and guidelines for disaster management.
India is a country in which different types of seasons come which give us a sense of the nature of many types of natural but often during the monsoon natural calamities also cause loss of life and property, hence the NDRF Police Force was created. It was created in 2006 on the basis of the National Disaster Management Act 2005. The force is completely under the ministry of home affairs. Its budget is Rs.250 billion in the year 2020-2021. About 13000 personnel works in it headed by a director-general (DG). Its headquarter Antyodaya Bhawan, New Delhi.
Why NDRF has been created?
NDRF was created to protect the people of India from any kind of disaster in our country. Their motto is ‘Saving lives & beyond’. NDRF has been created which takes the affected people to a safe place and protects life and property in the event of catastrophic natural calamities.
NDRF full form means National Disaster Response Force called ‘National Disaster Response Force’ which protects the common people from natural disasters and takes them to a safe place.
The NDRF force was formed in 2006 consisting of a paramilitary lines force of 12 battalions consisting of forces of 3 BSF, 3 CRPF, 2 CISF, 2 ITBP, and 2 SSB.
